Seeing Double? The Rapid Rise in Double Strollers
February 9th, 2009, Posted in double strollerTwenty years ago, a double stroller was a fairly hard item to come by. It certainly wasn’t a general staple in any baby store. Fast forward to 2009, and double strollers are in huge demand. That is simply because the number of multiple births has greatly increased over the last few decades.
Why have twins increased so much in 30 years or so? This is due to a number of societal items: 1) It’s more common in women over 35 to have twins (or triplets and beyond). This can be traced to many couples getting married at a later age. Also speaking in generalities, this is partly because women often have a much stronger business career focus compared to 30 or 40 years ago – partly out of individual choice, and partly out of family financial necessity. 2) The increase in fertility treatment. This is a major factor. It’s an amazing statistic to note that over 1/3 of all fertility-treatment pregnancies result in twins or more.
Now for overall numbers including the general population beyond fertility treatment couples, twins occur in approximately 1 in 85 births. Triplets have that ratio one factor greater, meaning 1 in 85 x 85 or roughly one in 7200.
So the bottom line is if you are a woman or a couple being blessed with twins or more, you are certainly in the market for a lot of items: Extra diapers, good quality baby monitors to keep an ear out, lots of toys, and of course a double stroller! You may be shopping for fraternal twins (genetically differing, indeed twins but different looks) or identical twins (identical genetics and therefore often strikingly similar looks).
Having twins is certainly something that will increase your popularity as a new mother when you’re outside of your home. Having a stroller that stands out by way of the two seat compartments and the added length can be a real head-turner for those around you. You’ll often find that many people are very happy to ask questions, give advise (whether you may want it or not!) and generally act quite pleasant around this somewhat novel situation. They may even go into their own stories about twins in their family. And if they are a twin themselves, look out! They will be happy to share their experiences with a new mom.
But don’t worry, it is all very well-meaning and for the best. Of course, you ultimately have all the choice to make for yourself and your family. Your stroller, however, is likely to be a new purchase, as your older sibling most likely does not have a two-seater to pass down to you! This will be an item that goes with you for some time, so be sure to shop wisely and check out all your options.
